MG Robert L. Moore

MG Robert L. Moore was born on 6 July 1930 in Bluefield, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in architecture and was commissioned a second lieutenant through the school's senior ROTC program. In 1959, he earned another bachelor's degree, in civil engineering, from the University of Missouri. He also received a master's degree in business administration from George Washington University in 1969. In addition, he was a 1963 graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and a 1969 graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Between 1952 and 1959, General Moore served as a student officer as well as in a variety of positions with the 506th and 5th Infantry Regiments. From July 1959 to August 1962, he served with the 553d Engineer Battalion in Europe. After graduating from the Command and General Staff College in July 1963, General Moore held various responsible command and staff assignments in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Among them were tours of duty as Staff Officer with the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Headquarters, U.S. Army, and with the U.S. Army Construction Division in Vietnam. Other assignments included command of the 87th Engineer Battalion in Vietnam; Military Assistant to the Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, Headquarters, U.S. Army; Director of Plans and Analysis, U.S. Army Materiel Command; District Engineer, U.S. Army Engineer District, Buffalo, New York; Executive to the Development Team, Army Materiel Acquisition Review Committee, Office of the Chief of Staff, Headquarters, U.S. Army; and Commander, Division Support Command, 2d Infantry Division in Korea.

From July 1975 to January 1978, General Moore served as the U.S. Army Division Engineer in Chicago, Illinois. He then became Chief of Staff for the U.S. Army Materiel Development and Readiness Command (the forerunner of the U.S. Army Materiel Command) in February 1978. On 31 July 1980, he was appointed Commanding General of the U.S. Army Missile Command. He served in that position until 26 July 1983.

General Moore received numerous decorations and citations. They included the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Korean Service Medal, the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant, Overseas Service Bars, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Legion of Merit (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the General Staff Identification Badge.
